CzechELib team has recently approached the EIR provider with a request for activation of the institutional login Shibboleth via eduGAIN, which is used in EIR for authentication for remote access and personalisation.

CzechELib team has recently approached the EIR provider with a request for activation of the institutional login Shibboleth via eduGAIN, which is used in EIR for authentication for remote access and personalisation. Collective activation saves institutions’ time while enabling technical support for commissioning of remote access through this service. Publishers also take care of requests for collective activations faster and with higher priority than individual requests of individual organisations. 

Institutional login simplifies users’ access to various systems of EIR providers and at the same time provides them with possibility of remote access to EIRs, i.e. even outside of registered IP addresses of their institutions. Practically speaking the user has the possibility to browse many databases using one username, which would otherwise be accessed via separate logins.

This type of authentication is becoming used more and more – EIR providers are even heading towards institutional login becoming the exclusive way of authentication. CzechELib offered the member institutions negotiating its activation with providers who support this technology. At this moment technical details are being discussed.

In total 82 member institutions have applied for the activation of institutional login, but there is still the possibility to join in the activation process through an e-mail request to info@czechelib.cz. The institutions will be informed about the current state of the activation during December.

Steps needed for setting of the institutional login for CzechELib members:

  1. Establishing of one’s own or hosted identity provider (if it’s not established yet)
  2. Registration in the eduID.cz federation
  3. Registration in the eduGAIN interfederation via eduID.cz
  4. Sending the entity ID of the organization’s identities provider registered in eduGAIN to info@czechelib.cz
  5. Activation of federative authentication by the publisher’s (done by CEL based on the provided entity ID)
